Center for Effective Government (CEG) Joining Forces with Project On Government Oversight (POGO)

After 33 years of independent operation, the Center for Effective Government (CEG) is folding most of its work and mission into the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), a nonpartisan independent watchdog that champions good government reforms to achieve a more effective, accountable, open, and ethical federal government.

The CEG Board of Directors said:

“The Center for Effective Government (formerly OMB Watch) has long been known for its important mission; the high-quality work of its staff; and its value to partners, allies, the media, policymakers, and the public. In considering how to best continue that strong and enduring work long into the future, and to build and strengthen the field, the Center’s board examined the changing environment in which it operates.

It found numerous allied organizations in Washington and beyond also striving to strengthen government and democracy, many having built an impressive capacity to do so. The board concluded that the Center’s mission would most effectively be served and powerfully sustained, and the greatest contributions to the field and the larger society made, in fuller collaboration with other organizations.

The stellar work and dedication of CEG’s staff, interns, partners, and allies have been key to the organization's three decades of achievements and successes, and will serve both as its legacy and as the foundation of a future of significant accomplishments through POGO and its other partners.”

Danielle Brian, POGO Executive Director, said:

“We are honored to build upon and continue the vital work CEG has been doing for more than three decades to strengthen democracy by connecting national policy debates with the concerns of everyday Americans. POGO’s mission of a government that’s more effective and accountable will be bolstered and enriched by the work and legacy of CEG.”

Additionally, POGO will be taking up a new role in the realm of government regulatory authority and independence, while CEG is transferring the staff support it provided as co-chair of the Coalition for Sensible Safeguards to the other co-chair, Public Citizen.
