"This is a deeply troubling development for our system of checks and balances and the rule of law. Who is going to be able to credibly oversee the FBI investigation into Russian interference into the US election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign? This raises questions about whether this move was aimed at interfering with an ongoing investigation. Whether intended or not it undermines the independence and credibility of that investigation. James Comey's firing makes the Senate investigations all the more crucial. They need to be fully resourced and unleashed."
