Congressional Oversight Initiative

What We Do and Why

The Congressional Oversight Initiative is a nonpartisan project to support and enhance Congress’s ability to conduct effective oversight and investigations.

Congress’s oversight efforts have waned over the past couple of decades. The institution has become increasingly unable to hold executive branch agencies and officials to account. Making things worse have been the departures over the years of several senior lawmakers who made oversight and investigations a hallmark of their service.

The Initiative offers trainings, an expert network of veteran former investigators, and hundreds of informational resources conveniently gathered into one place. The trainers and experts are both Democratic and Republican, and they will train staff from both parties, with an emphasis on bipartisan cooperation.

The effort expands on POGO’s Congressional Training Program, which, for nearly a decade, has provided monthly training seminars for congressional investigators.
