POGO Supports House Efforts to Preserve Special Counsel's Work

Dear Representative Doggett and Representative Raskin,

I am writing to express my support for the Special Counsel Transparency Act that you introduced today. Founded in 1981, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that champions good government reforms. POGO has spent decades fighting for enforcement of the rule of law and advocating for reforms that will earn and preserve public confidence in our federal institutions.

It is in this light that we support the reporting requirements your legislation would impose on the Department of Justice should Special Counsel Robert Mueller be fired before he is able to complete his investigation. The Special Counsel Transparency Act would require both the special counsel and the Attorney General submit reports to Congress detailing the status of the investigation at the time the special counsel was removed.

It is imperative to the country and our rule of law that Special Counsel Mueller be allowed to continue his investigation free from political pressures and that special counsels associated with future investigations are likewise insulated from politically motivated and untimely removal. However, in the case of such a removal, Congress must be given the information it needs to ensure that there is proper oversight over the Department of Justice.

Therefore, I urge your Republican and Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives to support the Special Counsel Transparency Act.
