 For Immediate ReleaseContact: Marthena Cowart (202) 347-1122 The United States Senate voted September 27 to establish an independent and bipartisan eight-member Commission on Wartime Contracting. Led by freshman Senators James H. Webb (D-VA) and Claire C. McCaskill (D-MO) the bill passed without dissent. The provision was approved as an amendment to the FY2008 Defense Authorization bill (H.R.1585 and S.A. 2999). “We congratulate this action by Congress to bring accountability to the enormous abuses seen in recent years in wartime contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We urge the President to sign this important legislation and bring best practices and good governance to federal contracting at long last,” said Danielle Brian, Executive Director of the Project on Government Oversight. On September 19, POGO endorsed the legislation in a letter to co-sponsors, McCaskill and Webb. “We believe this bill makes great strides toward holding accountable those who have been responsible for waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement of wartime contracts. The Commission on Wartime Contracting Act is an important step in addressing the phenomenal burden that has been placed on taxpayers due to waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement of wartime contracts.
