Media outlets are reporting today that Senator Saxby Chambliss has threatened to hold up the nomination of the Defense Department’s top acquisition official if the Pentagon does not rescind its decision to terminate the C-130J cargo aircraft program (click here to view the Air Force Times story).

Chambliss’ threat to block the nomination of Kenneth Krieg as undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics comes on the heels of Chambliss’ unsuccessful attempt to block funding for canceling the C-130J, a problem-plagued and overpriced aircraft that is built in Chambliss’ home state of Georgia.

POGO is supporting Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s proposal to terminate the aircraft. POGO joined National Taxpayers Union and Taxpayers for Common Sense in sending off a letter yesterday to Members of Congress in support of the cancellation action.

“This is naked pork-barrel politics,” said Danielle Brian, POGO ’s Executive Director. “Not only would the C-130J program drain taxpayer dollars, it would divert funding for more urgent needs of our troops.”

POGO investigates, exposes, and seeks to remedy systemic abuses of power, mismanagement, and subservience by the federal government to powerful special interests. Founded in 1981, POGO is a politically-independent, nonprofit watchdog that strives to promote a government that is accountable to the citizenry.
