October 26, 2006 Victory for POGO and the Taxpayers |

| October 26, 2006 Senator John McCain 241 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator McCain: Yesterday’s news that the Air Force has restructured the C-130J contract and will, as a result, save $168 million was welcome. As you know, POGO made this recommendation in our March 2005 report, “Taxpayers Carry the Load: The C-130J Cargo Plane Does Not.” Thank you for the leadership that you and your top notch staff have shown in increasing the integrity of the Pentagon’s buying on the C-130J, the Future Combat System, the Boeing Tanker leasing deal, the F-22 and many more weapons. Your efforts will ensure that more of the nation’s taxpayer dollars are going toward actually helping the troops, rather than lining the pockets of defense contractors. For too many years the Pentagon has looked the other way while the Boeings and Lockheed Martins of the world picked the American taxpayer’s pocket. The result is that our nation’s weapons-buying programs are in a shambles. It has become routine practice to accept substandard products running well over budget and behind schedule. Your commitment to oversight and investigations is changing these dynamics and making the Pentagon more open, honest, and accountable. Sincerely, Danielle Brian Executive Director
