POGO’s investigations into military weapons seek to illustrate some defense contractors’ improper influence on Pentagon decision making. For example, regardless of effectiveness or even Pentagon requests for these weapons, Members of Congress ardently support weapons systems built or maintained in their districts. These systemic flaws lead to misspending on military weapons programs, placing tax dollars and national defense at risk.

Members of Congress knew at the end of the first Gulf War that the U.S. Army's vaunted Patriot missiles had trouble discerning friend from foe and had been shooting down friendly aircraft.


Patriot Missile Problems Confirmed. Investigative reporters at CBS 11 in Dallas, TX confirm that the Patriot Missile has problems distinguishing between enemy and friendly targets. To learn more, read the story here and see POGO's April 2003 alert. February 6, 2004.

POGO Alert - Investigative Lead: Patriot Missile Problems Date Back to 1993. Friendly fire incidents involving Patriot missiles have resulted in three deaths in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
