Yesterday, DOE made the surprising announcement recommending the relocation of the Moab, Utah Uranium Mill tailings pile away from the Colorado River. Since the late-1990's, POGO has voiced concerns about the government’s plan to place a cap over the uranium pile rather than move it to a safer location.  Capping the pile would have allowed the uranium tailings, located in a 130-acre unlined pile about 750 feet from the Colorado River, to continue to seep into the river, the source of drinking water for more than 25 million residents in California and Arizona and home to several endangered species of fish.
