Contact: Beth Daley (202) 347-1122 Just days after a Senate Committee embraced reforms to protection consumer product whistleblowers, House leaders ditched them when it introduced the “Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act of 2007.” Completely missing from the House version of the bill are the provisions that would allow whistleblowers to challenge retaliation that they almost always face when coming forward. Forty-one organizations spanning the political spectrum expressed support for the whistleblower protections on the Senate bill. “While the House leadership congratulates itself for introducing its consumer protection bill, whistleblowers are facing the nightmare of being fired and harassed for telling the truth,” said Project On Government Oversight Executive Director Danielle Brian. A newly released PricewaterhouseCooper survey recently found that whistleblowers and other tip-offs are one of the top ways for companies to detect fraud and crime. Founded in 1981, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is an independent nonprofit that investigates and exposes corruption in order to achieve a more accountable federal government. # # #
