Request For Comments

Your interest in campaign finance reform has prompted us to seek your support for several FEC reforms. POGO has petitioned the FEC to begin formal rulemaking regarding the common sense changes advocated in our 1998 report entitled Re-Establishing Institutional Integrity at the FEC: Ten Common Sense Campaign Finance Disclosure Reforms. On October 13th, the FEC issued a Notice of Availability in the Federal Register seeking public comments on the six reforms stated in our report which we felt could be implemented without action from Congress.
POGO is requesting that the FEC:

Compare PAC disbursements with candidate receipts;

Group FEC data by two and six-year cycles;

Eliminate Irregular PAC names;

Eliminate Duplicate Entries;

Require candidates to report returned contributions promptly; and

Notify candidates of all "in-kind" contributions.
We have outlined these suggestions in our letter to the FEC and would like to request that you or your organization send any supporting comments to the FEC. We need your support for these.

Although, the magnitude of these changes are not immense, without these steps greater changes will not be possible.
