Defense Budget Demonstrates Department Increasing Accountability

February 1, 2010

"Defense Secretary Robert Gates' budget demonstrates again that he is prioritizing national security needs over parochial interests by calling for the termination of the C-17 cargo plane program. POGO also applauds the Secretary's decision to demonstrate real reform by holding both the prime contractor Lockheed Martin and the Department's program office accountable for the schedule and cost problems in the Joint Strike Fighter program. But it is up to Congress to demonstrate than they can exercise discipline and heed Gates' call."

Statement by Danielle Brian, Executive Director

Founded in 1981, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that champions good government reforms. POGO's investigations into corruption, misconduct, and conflicts of interest achieve a more effective, accountable, open, and ethical federal government.
