As Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) parrot the talking points of Pentagon contractors this week at town hall meetings in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and New Hampshire, we urge you to push back on some of the more outlandish rhetoric you’re likely to hear.

Senate Committee’s Decision to Close Markup on Defense Bill is Affront to Taxpayers

Statement of Danielle Brian, Executive Director, Project On Government Oversight: Once again, a majority of the Senate Armed Services Committee has decided that the public’s business is best done behind closed doors. The 18 members who voted to keep their deliberations of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) secret hid behind the false pretense that they were protecting the potential disclosure of classified information.

Navy’s Misinformation Campaign Aimed at Protecting Lockheed’s Troubled Ship

The Navy’s last-minute, full-court press to protect its troubled Littoral Combat Ship is not only disingenuous; it’s also an appalling example of how far Navy brass will go to protect one of its biggest contractors. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate did the right thing by demanding to know why the Navy’s close-to-shore combat ship has been plagued with leaks, corrosion and engine failures.

Watchdog Groups Identify Nearly $700 Billion in Wasteful Spending on National Security

The federal government could reduce the deficit by $688 billion over the next 10 years by cutting unneeded weapons—such as variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship—reining in out-of-control service contracts and slowing its investments in excess nuclear weapons, according to a report released today by the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) and Taxpayers for Common Sense.

Spending Even Less, Spending Even Smarter: Recommendations for National Security Savings, FY 2013 to FY 2022--Deficit Reduction: $688 Billion

Americans are tightening their belts, and it’s time for the U.S. government to do the same. In light of the Budget Control Act of 2011 and the subsequent failure of the “Super Committee,” Congress is still desperately seeking ways to reduce spending. To this end, the Project On Government Oversight and Taxpayers for Common Sense have closely examined the proposed national security budget. We found nearly $700 billion in savings over the next ten years, including cuts to wasteful weapons systems as well as limits on out-of-control contract spending.

Obama’s and Panetta’s Spending Plan Reassures Defense Contractors, But What About Taxpayers?

President Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta may have said a lot of the right things today when outlining the need to rein in military spending—they’ll get no argument from us on the need to move beyond the Pentagon’s out-of-date Cold War mentality.

But beyond the Secretary’s failure to provide specifics on how he’s going to achieve his budget savings, it was what he didn’t say that left us flabbergasted.

Panetta Ignoring More than $100 Billion in Potential Defense Savings

When Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reveals his strategy to “rebalance” defense priorities with decreasing funds tomorrow; he will likely miss several opportunities to cut wasteful spending from the bloated Pentagon budget.

That’s because the review only accounts for $450 billion in savings over the next decade as required by last year’s debt ceiling negotiations. But a recent report from the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) and Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS) found the federal government could save $586 billion over the same period by cutting unneeded weapons, reining in out-of-control private contracts, moving our nuclear arsenal to a post-Cold War footing, reforming the military health care system, and reducing the number of U.S. troops in Europe.

Osprey Odyssey: Rep Jones' Ten-Year Quest to Clear the Names of Two Marine Corps Pilots

In the spring of 2000, an MV-22 Osprey carrying 19 Marines crashed in the desert of Arizona during a nighttime training exercise, killing everyone on board. After the Marine Corps hastily announced that the crash was the result of human error, the news made the usual media rounds and then all but disappeared for the next decade. But for Representative Walter Jones (R-NC), this wasn’t the end of the story, it was only the prelude. After attending the funeral and meeting one of the Osprey pilots’ widows—who insisted that the crash was the result of faulty aircraft design, not pilot error—Jones embarked on a ten-year odyssey that continues to this day: a quest to hold the military accountable, clear the pilots’ names, and fight for the truth.
