Tell Congress: We Need Results-Driven Defense Spending

New audits don’t account for 61% of Pentagon assets. That’s a big problem. Sign our petition to tell Congress this can’t remain business as usual.

The national defense budget may climb to new heights every year, but one thing never seems to change: the Pentagon’s inability to actually keep track of the money. Last month, the acting Department of Defense Inspector General announced that the department has failed yet another financial audit, accounting for only 39% of its $3.5 trillion in assets.

In other words, the highest-funded federal agency is also the only one that has never passed a comprehensive financial audit. And Congress, which is ponying up an $858 billion defense budget for the coming fiscal year, keeps on throwing good money after bad and expecting different results.

The Pentagon spends too much of its budget on wasteful contracts that come at high costs to troops and taxpayers. That’s why POGO has been fighting tooth and nail for reforms that would safeguard the military from industry price-gouging and make the Department of Defense more accountable to American taxpayers.

We can’t keep pretending that the Pentagon should get away with a different set of standards in the name of a “strong defense policy.” That’s why we need your help lighting a fire under Congress to hold the Pentagon accountable.
