Tell the White House: We Need to Know Where Our Tax Dollars Go
The public deserves to know where tax dollars are spent, but the broken reporting system for federal awards leaves us in the dark. Urge the White House to fix it now.
Americans should know how the federal government spends their tax dollars. But vital information is missing from the reporting system for federal awards like contracts, loans, and grants, leaving the public — and Congress — in the dark about where trillions of dollars actually end up each year. Today, most adults in the U.S. do not believe the federal government is careful with taxpayer money, according to Pew Research Center polling.
As the White House rolls out the $1.2 trillion infrastructure spending package passed by Congress last year, now is the time to fix the reporting system’s critical flaws, which make oversight of federal awards unnecessarily difficult and open the door to waste and fraud.
