Captain Danny Hernandez (USN Ret.) worked as the director of communications to Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition) James Geurts from October 2017 until March 2021, according to his LinkedIn profile. In this role, he served as the “spokesperson to [the] most senior Department of Navy acquisition executive,” and “guided civilian and military personnel in communication strategies for the sustainment and development of Navy and Marine Corps platforms and warfare systems in excess of $140 billion annually.”

In August 2021, Huntington Ingalls Industries, a manufacturer of nuclear and non-nuclear ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, announced that Hernandez would, as of September 13, 2021, join as the firm’s corporate director of public affairs. The firm added that he would “transition into the position, and report to the executive vice president of communications, while based in the company’s Washington, D.C. office.”

In April 2020, while in his position as spokesperson for Assistant Secretary Geurts, the Navy announced it had awarded Huntington Ingalls a $1.5 billion contract modification for its LPD-31 amphibious transport dock ship. The original plan was to award the contract in December 2020, but Hernandez told Inside Defense that, “due to internal negotiations the plan moved to the right beyond March and was recently accelerated back to the left as Mr. Geurts highlighted.”

In fiscal year 2020, Huntington Ingalls was the Navy’s fifth largest contractor, receiving over $7.6 billion in contracts.
