General Lloyd J. Austin III (USA Ret.) was commander of U.S. CENTCOM, retiring in 2016. He joined the board of top Pentagon contractor United Technologies Corporation later that year. According to company proxy statements he's received about $1.4 million in compensation since joining the board in 2016. United Technologies Corporation merged with Raytheon in April of 2020.
Austin was confirmed as President Biden's Secretary of Defense on January 22, 2021. During the confirmation hearing, Austin committed to a four year recusal from matters involving Raytheon, after questions from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
