Detainee Death Review for Kamyar Samimi
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s official review of the death of Kamyar Samimi. Samimi, a citizen of Iran who had lived in the United States since 1976, died at an ICE detention center in Aurora, Colorado on December 2, 2017. The death review concludes that medical staff lacked proper training to treat Samimi for methadone withdrawal. Rather than treat his increasingly severe symptoms, medical staff attributed them to “malingering and seeking drugs,” and failed to send him to a hospital or even conduct a full physical examination.
