Department of Justice (DOJ)

Letter from Jeffrey Epstein Attorney Jay Lefkowitz to U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, November 29, 2007

By Nick Schwellenbach & Adam Zagorin | Filed under document | August 27, 2019

A lawsuit brought by Jeffrey Epstein’s victims unearthed an extensive correspondence between Epstein’s attorneys and the Justice Department showing that they used appeals to Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher to argue against notifying Epstein’s victims of the plea agreement struck with Epstein, widely seen as lenient. This correspondence was written during a critical time period when Acosta's office shifted from favoring notification to backing off from doing so.

Fisher denied Starr’s allegation in a statement issued to POGO, saying, “I did not make any decisions related to victim notification and any statement to the contrary is demonstrably false.”
