A highly anticipated report detailing the findings of a multi-year investigation into the controversial Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security Joseph V. Cuffari has been finalized and released to the public.
The report from the Integrity Committee of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, a little-known federal panel that investigates claims against watchdogs, concludes that Cuffari retaliated against a whistleblower, criticizes his evasive responses to critical inquiries from both the Integrity Committee and Congress, and denounces his record of misconduct. Our investigative desk breaks down the findings in a new piece on our website.
This news comes on the heels of another POGO investigation into Cuffari. POGO reported that Cuffari attempted to hinder and obstruct the Integrity Committee’s investigation into the claims against him by filing lawsuits aimed at halting the probes and by painting the investigation as political.
The Integrity Committee recommended “appropriate action, up to and including removal” of Cuffari from office. Members of Congress are calling for Cuffari’s resignation, and POGO Executive Director Danielle Brian has previously called for Biden to fire Cuffari.
Only a president has the power to fire an inspector general. The Biden Administration has been pointedly passive about Cuffari in the past. Now that the investigators themselves have stated that Cuffari “engaged in conduct undermining the independence or integrity reasonably expected of his position,” the ball is firmly in Biden’s court.
