Kyle Rempfer

Kyle Rempfer is a senior investigator at POGO Investigates, the news reporting division of the Project On Government Oversight. He has been covering the Department of Defense since 2017, working on staff as an editor and reporter at the independent Military Times family of publications, the Washington Post, and Breaking Defense.

Kyle’s work has often involved leveraging the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to break news and investigate notable events, including U.S. special operations, military equipment malfunctions and mishap trends, and misconduct in the military. His coverage of a mysterious explosion at a U.S. outpost in Syria, and the subsequent trial of a service member accused of carrying out the attack, won a 2024 Military Reporting and Editors (MRE) award for investigative journalism. His feature story on the Army’s failure to prosecute a series of sexual assaults won a 2022 MRE award for domestic coverage. Prior to becoming a journalist, Kyle served in Air Force Special Warfare as a combat controller. He was attached to an Army Green Beret team in southeastern Afghanistan and worked out of a strike cell in Baghdad during the early part of the campaign against the Islamic State. After leaving the military, Kyle attended college on the GI Bill, receiving a B.A. from the University of Maryland and an M.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
