Internships
Overview
PLEASE NOTE: POGO is not accepting applications for internships for Fall 2020.
The Project on Government Oversight (POGO) is looking for interns to help POGO achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles. Our investigations, analysis, and policy work touch on a variety of topics, including: defense spending; law enforcement’s use of surveillance technology; undue influence from industries like oil and gas drilling companies and pharmaceutical manufacturers; and strengthening government ethics standards and whistleblower protections.
At POGO, our interns are immersed in the gritty work of government oversight from day one. From attending meetings on Capitol Hill to combing through resources at the Library of Congress, you’ll be exposing problems that affect ordinary Americans and exploring solutions to present to Washington policymakers.
Most significantly, your work will continue to make an impact after your internship ends.
Types of Internships
-
POGO’s Investigative Team is looking for interns interested in learning how to achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles. Our topic areas range from defense spending to Homeland Security programs; from undue influence to strengthening government ethics standards and whistleblower protections.
-
POGO’s Development Team is looking for interns interested in learning the ins and outs about how a non-profit organization develops a sustainable revenue stream for its operations. This involves an in depth look at the decisions made to strategically develop and strengthen financial support for the organization from both funding institutions and individuals.
-
POGO’s Policy Team is looking for legal interns interested in learning the ins and outs of policy and advocacy on behalf of POGO, and helping to bring good government reforms to Congress and the Executive Branch.
-
Legal Internship with The Constitution Project
The Constitution Project (TCP) at POGO works to safeguard constitutional rights and values threatened by our government’s criminal justice and national security practices, and to strengthen our system of checks and balances. The TCP Team is looking for legal interns interested in learning to bridge the partisan divide on some of the most difficult constitutional questions of the day.
Logistics
All POGO internships are based in our Washington, DC office and require a commitment of 30 hours per week during normal office hours. We offer compensation ($15.25/hour) to interns who cannot receive school credit or outside funding for their internship experience.
POGO takes interns throughout the year and will work with an individual’s time restrictions as long as there is a minimum commitment of three months. Traditionally we have only accepted full-time interns, but if you can’t commit to full-time, please include in your cover letter why we should make an exception for you.
