Bipartisan Senate Vote Sends a Clear Message: No More Illegal Wars
The Senate just joined the House in a massive bipartisan victory for accountability. But the work isn't over.
Washington, D.C. — Now that the Senate has joined the House in rebuking President Trump’s illegal war in Iran, government watchdogs are encouraging Congress to continue holding the president accountable should he try to plunge us into war once more. David Janovsky, acting director of The Constitution Project at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), issued the following statement:
“The Senate just asserted what constitutional scholars, foreign policy experts, budget hawks, and the American people have been saying for months: The president should not have the power to unilaterally wage war. This is a major victory, but it’s not the end. If the president decides to ignore Congress and the people they represent and pulls the country back into an unsanctioned war, lawmakers should refuse to give a single dollar more to his failed war campaign. Today is proof that we can be a country that holds power to account, and tomorrow the work must continue.”
