Blanche AG Confirmation Would Undermine DOJ Independence
Blanche’s track record risks politicizing the Department of Justice even further.
Washington, D.C. — Government watchdogs are calling on Congress to reject Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General to protect the independence of the Department of Justice.
David Janovsky, acting director of The Constitution Project at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), issued the following statement:
“Confirming Todd Blanche as U.S. attorney general would undermine the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice. As acting attorney general, Blanche has repeatedly demonstrated that his loyalty is to Donald Trump, not to the Constitution and to the American people. He settled a meritless lawsuit by the president, creating a slush fund for January 6 rioters and shielding Trump and nearly anyone in his orbit from nearly any pending matters. Blanche also overseen several bad-faith prosecutions of political enemies. Even federal judges have criticized Blanche and the department attorneys he oversees for misleading the courts, failing to comply with judicial orders, and eroding confidence in the Department of Justice’s integrity.
“The Department of Justice is designed to enforce federal laws fairly and to protect the public’s interest. Confirming Blanche would send a clear message that the department’s first priority is protecting the president, not the public. We urge the Senate to reject Blanche’s nomination and protect the Department of Justice from further political interference.”
