Noem’s Ousting Proves That Public Pressure, Calls for Accountability Work

For months, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) has tracked the ways Noem failed to uphold the Constitution and protect communities across the country.

Washington, D.C. — Watchdogs are applauding President Trump’s decision to remove Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security, in response to bipartisan concerns that she was failing to uphold the Constitution and the people it protects. They are also urging Congress to ensure her replacement prioritizes the rule of law over political gain.

Earlier this week, POGO called for Noem’s impeachment following her dismal appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Its investigative arm, POGO Investigates, has also been reporting on ongoing misconduct in her department. David Janovsky, acting director of The Constitution Project at POGO, issued the following statement:

“This is what happens when Members of Congress do their jobs and listen to the concerns of the people they represent. Since taking office, Secretary Noem has consistently violated her oath to support and defend the Constitution. This week, we saw members of Congress on both sides of the aisle call out her corruption and misconduct, and the devastating impact it has had on communities across the country.

“Noem’s ousting is proof that public pressure works. For months, we and other advocates have been highlighting all of the ways in which Noem has betrayed the Constitution and those it protects, from attacking and arresting peaceful protestors to improperly detaining people in violation of court orders.

“The fight for an accountable and effective Department of Homeland Security does not end here. Congress must keep the pressure up to ensure her replacement does not continue the same abuses. Serving the Constitution — and as a result, serving the people — is the most fundamental aspect of any government official’s job, and we need a leader at DHS that prioritizes our safety and the rule of law above all else.”
