Congress Shouldn’t Fund an Illegal War

Funneling $200 billion to an illegal war without a plan for protecting service members would be a dangerous, massive waste of taxpayer dollars.

Washington, D.C. — Government watchdogs are urging Congress to reject requests for supplemental funding for the administration’s illegal war in the Middle East, citing constitutional, fiscal, and national security concerns.

Greg Williams, director of the Center for Defense Information at the Project On Government Oversight, issued the following statement:

"Congress should not fund an illegal war; this should be common sense. Sending hundreds of billions more to this war would be more than fiscal mismanagement – it’d be a slap in the face to the people who count on their representatives to champion their interests and uphold the Constitution.

"Communities across the country oppose another endless war in the Middle East, and members of Congress would be ignoring their constituents by funneling more tax dollars into this operation. Neither policymakers nor the public have gotten a clear answer on how, exactly, this funding will keep our service members or American civilians safe.

"From a purely practical perspective, it’s nearly impossible that another $200 billion would allow contractors to scale weapons production at the rate needed to restock necessary munitions and weapons in time to be useful in this conflict. Ultimately, whether it’s $200 billion or $50 billion or even $1 billion, there’s no scenario in which sending more tax dollars to this war would further American interests.

"Sending billions more to an illegal, unpopular war would be an affront to every single taxpayer and every single service member whose life and livelihood depends on the government listening to and working for them. Congress must oppose sending a penny more to this illegal war and instead focus its efforts on reclaiming its constitutional powers, ending this illegal war, and keeping our service members and our nation safe."
