Greg Williams

Director of the Center for Defense Information

Portrait of Greg Williams

Greg Williams is the director of the Center for Defense Information at the Project On Government Oversight. In this position, Greg coordinates the development of policies to make U.S. defense more effective and less costly. Since the vast majority of American voters and taxpayers will never serve in the military, he focuses on narrowing the gap in understanding between civilians who vote and pay for military operations and equipment and those who serve in uniform.

Greg worked at POGO from 1989 to 1992, and that work included assessments of wartime performance of weapons systems such as the M-1 main battle tank, the A-10 close air support aircraft, and the Apache helicopter, as well as of environmental remediation efforts in the Department of Energy nuclear weapons production complex.

Greg left POGO to pursue higher education and practical management experience in large organizations, earning a master’s degree, leading international information technology projects at Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM, leading new product introduction at a small defense manufacturer, and being selected as the General Services Administration’s deputy chief information officer. Returning to POGO to continue his work in the public interest realizes a decades-long dream.

Greg grew up in Westchester County, New York, and now resides in Saugerties, New York. He has two grown children and enjoys being outside as much as possible, preferably in snow or on ice. He has degrees in government from Dartmouth College and in business administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
