POGO Stands by Fired U.S. Air Marshal Robert MacLean

Statement of Scott Amey, General Counsel, Project On Government Oversight:

This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the Department of Homeland Security vs. Robert MacLean, the case involving a U.S. Air Marshal who blew the whistle on cut-backs that would have removed air marshals from high-risk long-distance flights when the government was aware of a looming terrorist hijacking plot.

The Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is proud to be one of several organizations that has filed an amicus brief in support of Robert MacLean.

We believe Mr. MacLean had a constitutional right to warn the public about the substantial and specific danger to air safety. This case not only fights to protect whistleblowing, but it also exposes the Department of Homeland Security’s misuse of Controlled Unclassified Information to silence and retaliate against Mr. MacLean. He deserves our gratitude for exposing a government decision that jeopardized public safety.
